True by Spandau Ballet reached the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1983, replacing Let’s dance by David Bowie. It had entered the top 40 the previous week at number 10.
The song spent four weeks at number 1 and then yielded the position to Candy girl by New Edition. After falling from the top spot, the record stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks and then fell into the lower top 40 for the last three weeks of its chart life.
True was released on the Reformation record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Spandau Ballet but the sixth of their ten top 10 singles. It was taken from a platinum-selling album of the same name that spent one week at the top of the UK album chart. The single was certified gold.
In 1991, a sample from True was used in PM Dawn’s Set adrift on memory bliss. The single peaked at number 3 in the UK chart.
