This week in 1983, True love ways by Cliff Richard with the London Philharmonic Orchestra reached its highest position of number 8 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 37. After just one week in the top 10, the song dropped into the lower top 40 for the final four weeks of its chart life.
True love ways was released on the EMI record label and was the forty-ninth UK top 10 hit for Cliff Richard. It was taken from the silver-selling album Dressed for the occasion, which peaked at number 7 in the UK album chart.
The original version of the song was recorded by Buddy Holly in 1960 and reached number 25 in the UK chart. Two other versions have entered the top 40. In 1965, Peter and Gordon took a cover version to number 2 and a recording by David Essex and Catherine Zeta Jones peaked at number 38 in 1994.
