Thirty years ago this week, Automatic by the Pointer Sisters was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the second of two weeks. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 38 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later. After falling from its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for one more week, at number 4, and then spent the final three weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
Automatic was released on the Planet record label and was the second of three top 10 hits for the Pointer Sisters in the UK. It was taken from the gold-selling album Break out, which peaked at number 9 in the UK album chart. The single was certified silver.
