This week in 1963, I (who have nothing) by Shirley Bassey reached its highest position of number 6 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 27 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 10 for another four weeks. A further nine weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
I (who have nothing) was released on the Columbia record label and was the ninth of twelve top 10 hits for Shirley Bassey in the UK. The song was originally recorded by Joe Sentieri in Italian in 1961 as Uno dei tanti.
The first recording in English was by Ben E King in 1963 but his version did not enter the UK singles chart. The only other version to enter the top 40 was a recording by Tom Jones in 1970 that reached number 16.
