Mr Vain by Culture Beat replaced Living on my own by Freddie Mercury at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1993. It had entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 24 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later.
The song stayed at number 1 for four weeks and then made way for Boom! Shake the room by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. A further three weeks in the top 10 followed, two of them in the top 5, then three more in the lower top 40 before the record left the chart.
Mr vain was released on the Epic record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Culture Beat but the first of three singles to enter the top ten. It was taken from the gold-selling album Serenity, which peaked at number 13 in the UK albums chart. The single was also certified gold.
