Twenty years ago this week, The key the secret by the Urban Cookie Collective was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the first of two weeks. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 40 and broke into the top 10 four weeks later. After falling from its peak position, the song spent another three weeks in the top 10 and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.

The key the secret was released on the Pulse 8 record label and was the first of two top 10 hits for the Urban Cookie Collective in the UK. It was included on the album High on a happy vibe, which peaked at number 28 in the UK albums chart in 1994. The single was certified silver.

The song was remixed and re-issued several times. One of these remixes entered the top 40 in 2005, peaking at number 31.
