Ten years ago this week, Big yellow taxi by Counting Crows featuring Vanessa Carlton entered the UK singles chart at number 16. This was the highest position the song achieved. The record left the chart after another four weeks in the top 40.
Big yellow taxi was released on the Geffen record label and was the third of four UK top 40 hits for Counting Crows and the second of two for Vanessa Carlton. It was taken from Counting Crows’ gold-selling album Hard candy, which peaked at number 9 in the UK albums chart.
The original version of the song was written and recorded by Joni Mitchell in 1970 when it reached number 11 in the UK chart. The only other recording of the song to enter the top 40 was a 1995 cover version by Amy Grant that peaked at number 20.
