Michelle by the Overlanders replaced Keep on running by the Spencer Davis Group at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1966, having entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 36. The song spent three weeks at number 1 and then made way for These boots are made for walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra.
After falling from the top spot, the record stayed in the top 10 for one more week, at number 5. It then slipped into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.
Michelle was released on the Pye record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for the Overlanders. It was taken from an album of the same name that did not enter the UK albums chart.
The original version of the song was recorded by the Beatles in 1965 for their album Rubber soul. A recording by David & Jonathan also entered the singles chart in 1966, peaking at number 11.
