The finger of suspicion by Dickie Valentine with the Stargazers replaced Let’s have another party by Winifred Atwell at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1955, having entered the top 20 three weeks previously at number 7. After one week at number 1, it fell to number 2 and was succeeded by Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney and the Mellomen.
The song returned to the top spot after one week at number 2 and stayed there for another two weeks before making way for Mambo Italiano again. It then spent another seven weeks in the top 10, six of them in the top 5, before falling to number 17 for one last week in the chart.
The finger of suspicion was released on the Decca record label. It was the first of two UK number 1 hits for Dickie Valentine and the last of three for the Stargazers.
