Sixty years ago this week, Mr sandman by the Chordettes reached its highest position of number 11 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 20 three weeks previously at number 17. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart by remained in the top 20 for another four weeks.
Mr sandman was released on the Columbia record label and was the first of three top 20 hits for the Chordettes in the UK. The original version of the song was recorded by Vaughan Monroe and His Orchestra but it did not enter the UK chart.
Three other versions of the song did enter the chart around the same time as the Chordettes. Max Bygraves took his version to number 16, the Four Aces reached number 9 and Dickie Valentine’s recording peaked at number 5.
