Fifty years ago this week, I understand by Freddie and the Dreamers was at its highest position of number 5 in the UK singles chart for the second of two weeks. It had entered the top 40 seven weeks previously at number 27 and broke into the top 10 five weeks later. After falling from its peak position, the song spent five weeks in the lower top 40 and then left the chart.
I understand was released on the Columbia record label and was the last of four top 10 hits for Freddie and the Dreamers in the UK. It was taken from the album Freddie and the Dreamers, which peaked at number 5 in the UK album chart.
This was the second version of the song to enter the UK top 40. In 1961, a version by the G-Clefs reached number 17.
