This week in 1984, I want to break free by Queen was at its highest position of number 3 in the UK singles chart for the first of three weeks. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 18 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After falling from its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for another three weeks, two of them in the top 5, and then spent the final three weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
I want to break free was released on the EMI record label and was the thirteenth of twenty-six UK top 10 hits for Queen. It was taken from the platinum-selling album The works, which peaked at number 2 in the UK album chart.
