Thirty years ago this week, Against all odds (take a look at me now) by Phil Collins was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the first of three weeks. It had entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 26 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After falling from its peak position, the song spent three more weeks in the top 10, one of them in the top 5. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Against all odds (take a look at me now) was released on the Virgin record label and was the third of thirteen UK top 10 hits for Phil Collins. It was recorded for the film Against all odds and appeared on its soundtrack album. The single was certified gold in the UK and was a US number 1.
Two other versions of the song have entered the UK chart. The first, by Mariah Carey featuring Westlife, spent two weeks at number 1 in 2000. Then, in 2005, Steve Brookstein topped the chart for one week with his version.
