Forty years ago this week, Love’s theme by the Love Unlimited Orchestra entered the UK top 10 at number 10, having entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 34. After one week at its peak position, the record slipped into the lower top 40 for the final five weeks of its chart life.
Love’s theme was released on the Pye International record label and was the only top 10 hit for the Love Unlimited Orchestra in the UK. It was included on the album Rhapsody in white, which failed to enter the UK albums top 40 later in 1974, peaking at number 50. The single was a US number 1.
The tune returned to the top 40 in 1993 when it was sampled for Dream of me (based on love’s theme) by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. The single reached number 24.
