Daydreamer / The puppy song by David Cassidy reached the top of the UK singles chart forty years ago this week, replacing Eye level by the Simon Park Orchestra. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 8.
The song spent three weeks at number 1 and then made way for I love you love me love by Gary Glitter. After falling from the top spot, the record stayed in the top 10 for one more week and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final eight weeks of its chart life.
Daydreamer / The puppy song was released on the Bell record label and was the second of two UK number 1 hits for David Cassidy. Both tracks were taken from the gold-selling album Dreams are nuthin’ more than wishes, which spent one week at the top of the UK album chart.
The puppy song was first recorded by Mary Hopkin for her album Post card, which peaked at number 3 in the UK album chart in 1969. The song was written by Harry Nilsson and was included on his album Harry, which was also released in 1969 but did not enter the UK chart.
