This week in 1973, My friend Stan by Slade reached its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 the previous week at number 4. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 10 for another three weeks, two of them in the top 5. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
My friend Stan was released on the Polydor record label and was the eighth of sixteen UK top 10 hits for Slade. It was included on the gold-selling album Old new borrowed and blue, which spent one week at the top of the UK album chart in 1974. The single was certified silver.
