Boom! Shake the room by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince replaced Mr vain by Culture Beat at the top of the UK singles chart twenty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 12 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The song spent two weeks at number 1 and then made way for Relight my fire by Take That featuring Lulu. It spent another five weeks in the top 10, four of them in the top 5, before dropping into the lower top 40 for the final two weeks of its chart life.
Boom! Shake the room was released on the Jive record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. It was taken from the album Code red, which failed to enter the UK albums top 40, peaking at number 50. The single was certified silver.
The single contained samples of other songs including one previous top 40 hit, Jump by Kris Kross, which had reached number 2 in the UK chart in 1992.
