Living on my own by Freddie Mercury replaced Pray by Take That at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1993, having entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 5. The single spent two weeks at number 1 and then made way for Mr vain by Culture Beat.
After falling from the top spot, the song spent three more weeks in the top 10, two of them in the top 5. A further four weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Living on my own was released on the Parlophone record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Freddie Mercury as a solo artist. The single was certified gold and was a remix of an earlier release.
The original version of the song was released as a single in 1985 but failed to enter the top 40, peaking at number 50. It was taken from the gold-selling album Mr bad guy, which peaked at number 6 in the UK albums chart.
