Memories are made of this by Dean Martin replaced Sixteen tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford at the top of the UK singles chart sixty years ago this week, having entered the top 20 the previous week at number 4. The song stayed at number 1 for four weeks and then made way for It’s almost tomorrow by the Dream Weavers.
After falling from the top spot, the song stayed in the top 10 for another seven weeks, three of them in the top 5. It then dropped into the lower top 30 for the final four weeks of its chart life.
Memories are made of this was released on the Capitol record label and was the only number 1 hit for Dean Martin in the UK. The single also topped the US chart.
The song was also a hit in 1956 for Dave King who took it to number 5. A version by Val Doonican reached number 11 in 1967.
