Thirty years ago this week, Step off (part 1) by Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five entered the UK top 10 at its highest position of number 8, having entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 35. After one week at its peak position, the song slipped out of the top 10 and spent the final four weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
Step off (part 1) was released on the Sugarhill record label. It was the second of two top 10 hits for Melle Mel in the UK.
