I want to know what love is by Foreigner replaced Do they know it’s Christmas? by Band Aid at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1985. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 26 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later.

The song stayed at number 1 for three weeks and then made way for I know him so well by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson. It then spent another two weeks in the top 10, both in the top 5, before dropping into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.

I want to know what love is was released on the Atlantic record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Foreigner. It was taken from the platinum-selling album Agent provocateur, which spent three weeks at the top of the UK albums chart. The single was certified gold in the UK and was also a US number 1.

The song returned to the top 40 in 2009 when Mariah Carey recorded a cover version. The single reached number 19.
