You’re the first, the last, my everything by Barry White replaced Gonna make you a star by David Essex at the top of the UK singles chart forty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 38 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later.
The song was succeeded at number 1 after two weeks by Lonely this Christmas by Mud. After falling from the top spot, the single stayed in the top 10 for another three weeks, two of them in the top 5. A further two weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
You’re the first, the last, my everything was released on the 20th Century record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Barry White. It was taken from the gold-selling album Can’t get enough, which peaked at number 4 in the UK albums chart and was a US number 1. The single was certified silver.
In 2005 a cover version of the song was recorded by Howard Brown as a charity single. The single reached number 13 in the UK chart.
