I should have known better by Jim Diamond replaced I feel for you by Chaka Khan at the top of the UK singles chart thirty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 40 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later.
The song was succeeded at number one by The power of love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood after one week. After falling from the top spot, it stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks, one of them in the top 5, and then slipped into the lower top 40 for the final four weeks of its chart life.
I should have known better was released on the A&M record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Jim Diamond. It was taken from the album Double crossed, which did not enter the UK albums chart.
