Twenty years ago this week, I swear by All-4-One was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the sixth of seven weeks. It had entered the top 40 seven weeks previously at number 17 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After falling from its peak position, the song spent another four weeks in the top 10, one of them in the top 5. A further four weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
I swear was released on the Atlantic record label and was the only top 10 hit for All-4-One in the UK. It was taken from the group’s eponymous debut album, which reached number 25 in the UK albums chart. The single was certified platinum in the UK and was a US number 1.
The original version of the song was recorded by John Michael Montgomery in 1993. Montgomery’s single did not enter the UK chart.
