Forty years ago this week, Break the rules by Status Quo entered the UK top 10 at its highest position of number 8, having entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 38. After one week at its peak position the song slipped to number 11 for one week before returning to the top 10 for one final week at number 10. It then spent the last two weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
Break the rules was released on the Vertigo record label and was the fifth of twenty-two UK top 10 hits for Status Quo. It was taken from the gold-selling album Quo, which peaked at number 2 in the UK album chart.
