Forty years ago this week, Don’t stay away too long by Peters and Lee reached its highest position of number 3 in the UK singles chart in its fifth week in the top 40 and second in the top 10. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks. It then spent the final five weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
Don’t stay away too long was released on the Philips record label and was the second of two top 10 hits for Peters and Lee in the UK. It was included on the gold-selling album Rainbow, which peaked at number 6 in the UK album chart later in 1974. The single was certified silver.
