Thirty years ago this week, Cherry oh baby by UB40 reached its highest position of number 12 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 28. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 40 for another two weeks.
Cherry oh baby was released on the DEP International record label and was the twelfth of forty UK top 40 hits for UB40. It was taken from the double-platinum-selling album Labour of love, which spent on week at the top of the UK albums chart.
The original version of the song was written and recorded by Eric Donaldson in 1971. The single failed to enter the UK chart.
