Thirty years ago this week, Joanna / Tonight by Kool and the Gang was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the second of two weeks. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 26 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After falling from its peak position, the record stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks, one of them in the top 5, and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final two weeks of its chart life.

Joanna / Tonight was released on the De-Lite record label and was the fifth of eight UK top 10 hits for Kool and the Gang. Both tracks were taken from the silver-selling album In the heart, which peaked at number 18 in the UK album chart. The single was also certified silver.
