Forty years ago this week, Roll away the stone by Mott The Hoople was at its highest position of number 8 in the UK singles chart for the first of two weeks in its third week in the top 40 and first in the top 10. After two weeks at its peak position, the song fell to number 9 for a final three weeks in the top 10. A further five weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Roll away the stone was released on the CBS record label and was the last of three UK top 10 hits for Mott The Hoople. It was included on the gold-selling album The hoople, which peaked at number 11 in the UK albums chart in 1974.
