Only you by the Flying Pickets replaced Uptown girl by Billy Joel at the top of the UK singles chart thirty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 the previous week at number 9.
The song spent five weeks at number 1 and then made way for Pipes of peace by Paul McCartney. After falling from the top spot, the record spent one more week in the top 10, at number 10, and then fell to number 25 for a final week in the top 40.
Only you was released on the 10 record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for the Flying Pickets but the first of two of their singles to enter the top 10. It was included on the silver-selling album Lost boys, which peaked at number 11 in the UK albums chart in 1984.
The original version of the song was recorded by Yazoo in 1982 when it peaked at number 2. Yazoo’s version also reached number 38 in 1999.
