This week in 1985, Nightshift by the Commodores reached its highest position of number 3 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 32 and broke into the top 10 three weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the song fell to number 5 for a final week in the top 10 and then spent the last four weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
Nightshift was released on the Motown record label and was the last of five top 10 hits for the Commodores in the UK. It was taken from an album of the same name that peaked at number 13 in the UK albums chart. The single was certified silver and was recorded as a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.
