Forty years ago this week, (Hey there) lonely girl by Eddie Holman reached its highest position of number 4 in the UK singles chart in its fifth week in the top 40 and second in the top 10. After two weeks at its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks in then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.
(Hey there) lonely girl was released on the ABC record label and was the only top 10 hit for Eddie Holman in the UK. It was taken from the album Lonely girl (known as I love you outside the UK), which did not enter the UK albums chart. The single was certified silver.
The original version of the song was recorded by Ruby & the Romantics in 1963 as Hey there lonely boy. The single did not enter the UK chart.
