Gonna make you a star by David Essex replaced Everything I own by Ken Boothe at the top of the UK singles chart forty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 19 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The single was succeeded by You’re the first, the last, my everything by Barry White after three weeks at number 1. After falling from the top spot, the song stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks, both of them in the top 5. A further five weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Gonna make you a star was released on the CBS record label and was the first of two UK number 1 hits for David Essex. It was taken from the gold-selling album David Essex, which peaked at number 2 in the UK albums chart. The single was also certified gold.
