Thirty years ago this week, Closest thing to heaven by the Kane Gang reached its highest position of number 12 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 30. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 40 for another four weeks.
Closest thing to heaven was released on the Kitchenware record label and was the first of two UK top 40 hits for the Kane Gang. It was included on the album The bad and lowdown world of the Kane Gang, which peaked at number 21 in the UK album chart in 1985.
