The house of the rising sun by the Animals replaced It’s over by Roy Orbison at the top of the UK singles chart fifty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 31 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The song only stayed at number 1 for one week before making way for It’s all over now by the Rolling Stones. It spent another four weeks in the top 10 and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final five weeks of its chart life.
The house of the rising sun was released on the Columbia record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for the Animals. It was a traditional folk song that was also known as Rising sun blues. The song has been recorded by many artists but the only other version to enter the UK top 40 was a number 4 hit for Frijid Pink in 1970.
