Sugar baby love by the Rubettes replaced Waterloo by ABBA at the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1974. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 27 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The song stayed at number 1 for four weeks and then made way for The streak by Ray Stevens. After falling from the top spot, the record spent one more week in the top 10, at number 6, and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.
Sugar baby love was released on the Polydor record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for the Rubettes. It was taken from the album Wear it’s ‘at, which did not enter the UK album chart. The single was certified gold.
