The real thing by Tony Di Bart replaced The most beautiful girl in the world by (Symbol) at the top of the UK singles chart twenty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 13 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The song stayed at number 1 for just one week before yielding the position to Inside by Stiltskin. After falling from the top spot, the record spent another two weeks in the top 10, one of them in the top 5, and then slipped into the lower top 40 for the last three weeks of its chart life.
The real thing was released on the Cleveland City Blues record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Tony Di Bart. It was included on the album Falling for you, which failed to enter the UK album chart in 1996. The single was certified silver.
