This week in 1974, Homely girl by the Chi-Lites reached its highest position of number 5 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 40 and broke into the top 10 four weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Homely girl was released on the Brunswick record label and was the second of six top 10 hits for the Chi-Lites in the UK. It was taken from the album Chi-Lites, which did not enter the UK album chart. In 1989, UB40 recorded a version of the song that peaked at number 6.
