Forty years ago this week, After the goldrush by Prelude reached its highest position of number 21 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 six weeks previously at number 39. After one week at its peak position, the song fell to number 29 for a final week in the top 40.
After the goldrush was released on the Dawn record label and was the only top 40 hit for Prelude in the UK, although it entered the chart twice. It was taken from the album How long is forever, which did not enter the UK album chart.
The original version of the song was written and recorded by Neil Young in 1970 for his double-platinum-selling album of the same name, which peaked at number 7 in the UK album chart. Prelude’s a cappella version was re-issued in 1982 when it reached number 28.
