Without you by Mariah Carey entered the UK singles chart at number 1 this week in 1994, replacing Things can only get better by D:Ream. The song spent four weeks at the top of the chart and then yielded the position to Doop by Doop.
After falling from the top spot, the song spent four more weeks in the top 10, two of them in the top 5. It then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final three weeks of its chart life.
Without you was released on the Columbia record label and was the first of two UK number 1 hits for Mariah Carey. It was taken from the quintuple-platinum-selling Music box, which spent six weeks at the top of the UK album chart and was also a US number 1. The single was certified gold.
The original version of the song was recorded by Badfinger in 1970 for their album No dice but it was not released as a single. The first single version to enter the chart was recorded by Nilsson in 1971 and was a number 1 hit the following year in the UK, where it spent five weeks at the top of the chart, and the USA.
