This week in 1974, Solitaire by Andy Williams reached its highest position of number 4 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 five weeks previously at number 36 and broke into the top 10 three weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks. A further five weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.
Solitaire was released on the CBS record label and was the eighth of nine top 10 hits for Andy Williams in the UK. It was taken from a gold-selling album of the same name that peaked at number 3 in the UK album chart.
The original version of the song was recorded and co-written by Neil Sedaka for his 1972 album Solitaire that failed to enter the UK album chart. The only other version to enter the top 40 was a 1975 recording by the Carpenters that reached number 32.
