Thirty years ago this week, Girls just want to have fun by Cyndi Lauper reached its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 23 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but stayed in the top 10 for another three weeks, two of them in the top 5. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.

Girls just want to have fun was released on the Portrait record label and was the first of four top 10 hits for Cyndi Lauper in the UK. It was taken from the gold-selling album She’s so unusual, which peaked at number 16 in the UK album chart. The single was certified silver.

The song has entered the top 40 on two other occasions. In 1994, Cyndi Lauper re-recorded it as Hey now (girls just want to have fun) and reached number 4 and a cover version in 2000 by Lolly, with the title Girls just wanna have fun, peaked at number 14.
