This week in 1973, When I fall in love by Donny Osmond reached its highest position of number 4 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 23 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After one week at its peak position, the song dropped out of the top 10 and spent the final seven weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.
When I fall in love was released on the MGM record label and was the sixth of seven top 10 hits for Donny Osmond in the UK. It was taken from the gold-selling album A time for us, which peaked at number 4 in the UK album chart. The single was certified silver.
The original version of the song was recorded by Jeri Southern in April 1952, seven months before the first UK singles chart was published. It has entered the top 40 on two other occasions, however. In 1957, Nat ‘King’ Cole released a version that peaked at number 2 and Rick Astley also reached number 2 with his recording in 1987.
