Twenty years ago this week, True love by Elton John and Kiki Dee was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the first of two weeks. It had entered the top 40 the previous week at number 8. After two weeks at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 10 for another four weeks. It then fell to number 21 for a final week in the top 40.
True love was released on the Rocket record label and was the twenty-first UK top 10 hit for Elton John and the second for Kiki Dee. It was taken from Elton John’s platinum-selling album Duets, which peaked at number 5 in the UK album chart. The single was certified silver.
The original version of the song was recorded by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly for the film High society and peaked at number 4 in the UK chart in 1957. Three other versions have entered the top 40. In 1961, Terry Lightfoot and His New Orleans Jazzmen reached number 33, Richard Chamberlain’s recording peaked at number 30 in 1963 and Shakin’ Stevens took his version to number 23 in 1988.
