Sixty years ago this week, Dragnet by Ted Heath and His Music re-entered the UK singles chart at its highest position of number 9, having originally spent one week at number 12 five weeks previously. After one week in the top 10, the tune left the chart again but returned to the top 12 after a one-week absence for a final week at number 11.
Dragnet was released on the Decca record label and was the second of four UK top 10 hits for Ted Heath and His Music. The tune was also recorded by Ray Anthony in 1953 and peaked at number 7 a week after Heath peaked at number 9. In 1987, the Art Of Noise recorded a version for that year’s film adaptation of the television show but the single failed to enter the UK top 40, peaking at number 60.
