Sixty years ago this week, Answer me by Frankie Laine replaced Answer me by David Whitfield at the top of the UK singles chart, having entered the top 12 two weeks previously at number 3. It stayed at number 1 for eight weeks and then made way for Oh mein Papa by Eddie Calvert. After falling from the top spot, the song stayed in the top 10 for another seven weeks and then left the chart. During its stay at the top of the chart, it was joined at number 1 for one week by David Whitfield’s version of the same song. This was the only time in chart history that two songs shared the top spot.
Answer me was released on the Philips record label and was the third of four UK number 1 hits for Frankie Laine. A third version of the song entered the top 40 in 1976 when Barbara Dickson took it to number 9.
