Uptown girl by Billy Joel reached the top of the UK singles chart this week in 1983, replacing Karma chameleon by Culture Club. It had entered the top 40 two weeks previously at number 25 and broke into the top 10 a week later.
The song stayed at number 1 for five weeks and then made way for Only you by the Flying Pickets. After falling from the top spot, the record spent another two weeks in the top 10, one of them in the top 5, and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final five weeks of its chart life.
Uptown girl was released on the CBS record label and was the only UK number 1 hit for Billy Joel. It was taken from the triple-platinum-selling album An innocent man, which peaked at number 2 in the UK album chart. The single was certified gold.
The song returned to the to 40 when Westlife recorded a cover version. The cover also reached the top of the UK singles chart, spending one week there in 2001.
