Sixty years ago this week, Cowpuncher’s cantata by Max Bygraves was at number 8 in the UK singles chart, having re-entered the top 12 three weeks previously at its highest position of number 6. The song had spent one week at number 11 in the first week of the new chart in November 1952 but had then disappeared. It had returned to the top 10 for one week at number 8 at the beginning of 1953 but had left again. After one week at number 8 for the second time, the record dropped out of the top 10 to number 12. It left the chart the following week but then returned for one final week at number 10.
Cowpuncher’s cantata was released on the HMV record label. It was the first of seven UK top 10 hits for Max Bygraves.
